(Oncorhynchus nerka)
Most Sockeye Salmon spend about half their lives in the large pasture of open ocean south of the Aleutian Islands where they develop the rich flavor and bright red flesh that is characteristic of this species from a diet of krill. Their diet makes them unusually potent sources of astaxanthin an extra-potent, carotenoid-class antioxidant pigment. Wild Sockeye absorb astaxanthin from the zooplankton they eat.
A blue-tinged silver in color, sockeye salmon live four to five years, weigh up to 7 lb. (3.2 kg), and are the slimmest and most streamlined of the five species of Pacific salmon. It is the most sought-after salmon species due to its rich flavor and firm, deep red flesh.
The Sockeye is beyond description! I am a true believer in good food and will be with you a long time. As your blog has described the unfortunate tactics of unscrupulous fish peddlers, Wild Ocean Seafoods is a bright spot in my kitchen.

Best mail-order fish ever!, January 2, 2007
I have ordered a lot of fish through the mail, and let me tell you, this is the best I have ever had.
So do yourself a favour, and order up these here sockeye fillets. You're talking somewhere around 10 bucks a pound, and worth every penny!
